Zach Carson, 17, of Oshawa, shot 72 to Win an All-expense Paid Trip to the Optimist International Championships in Florida
On a warm sunny day, sixty-three (63) young golfers competed in the Annual Optimist Central Ontario District Junior Qualifying Golf Tournament held Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Caledon Country Club, hosted by the Optimist Club of Brampton.
Zach Carson, 17, of Oshawa was the 16-18 year old winner and qualified for an all-expense paid trip to the International Optimist Junior Golf Championships in Florida this July. Mathew Iceton, 17, of Brooklin shot 76 to qualify for Florida as well. Third was Marc Gallo, 16, of Aurora with a score of 78.
The winner in the 14-15 age group was Joey Hetherman,15, of Burlington with a remarkable score of 72. Joey also qualified to compete in Florida. Second place was a three-way tie with 15 year old Matthew Deven of London, Alex Vegh, 15, of Aurora, and Kyle Fancy, 14, of Erin all shooting 78.
In the 12-13 age group, the trophy was claimed by 13 year old Sam Meek of Peterborough with a score of 77. Runners-up, with matching scores of 81, were 12 year old Nathan Douglas of Thornhill and James Parsons, 13, of Almonte. Since Sam Meek declined the opportunity to participate in Florida, both Douglas and Parsons will advance to Florida and represent this age group.
In the 10-11 age group the winner was 11 year old Dee Xie of Toronto with a score of 86. Alex Hodgkinson, 17, of Brockville shot 81 to win the 15-18 girls category. Alex qualified for Florida.
In the 13-14 girls competition, 14 year old Madeline Marck-Sherk of Sherkston shot 80 to win the 13-14 age group and was also named top female golfer. Sonia Nagindas, 14, of Aurora was second with a score of 83.
The following nine golfers qualified to advance to the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships held at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida July 19 - July 29, 2012:

All the above golfers also qualified to play in the Optimist Canadian National Junior Golf Championships to be held in London, Ontario at Fanshawe Golf Club on August 13-15, 2012.
