The Optimist International Junior Golf Competition begins at the Club or Zone and then the District Level.

Central Ontario Junior Golf

Each year Central Ontario holds a Junior Golf competition. There are more than 50 qualifying tournaments like ours involving 5,000 players from ages 10 to 18. Past winners of the International Tournament include Brook Henderson and Tiger Woods. Be sure to watch the video below from the participants' perspective.

On a sunny day, twenty-four young golfers competed in the Annual Optimist Central Ontario District Junior Qualifying Golf Tournament held Saturday, June 24, 2017 at Caledon Country Club, and hosted by the Optimist Club of Brampton.

Zachary Katzenstein, 16, of Thornhill shot 78 and was the 16-18 year old winner. He qualified for an all-expense paid trip to the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in Florida this July.

Sarah Cushing, 17, of Brockville shot 80 to win the 15-18 girls category. Sarah also qualified for an all-expenses paid trip to the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in Florida this July.

In total, the following six golfers qualified to advance to the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships held at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida July 18 – August 2.

Zachary Katzenstein - 16  - District  Winner  (16 to 18 age group)
Andrew Kraik -  14 -  District  Winner (14 to 15 age group)
Jordan Breen  -  15  -  Runner-up (14 to 15 age group)
James Newton - 13 - District Winner  (12 to 13 age group)
Carter O’Brien - 11  -  District Winner (10 to 11 age group)
Sarah Cushing - 17 -  District  Winner  (15 to 18 Girls age group)

All the above golfers also qualified to play in the Optimist Canadian National Junior Golf Championships to be held in London, Ontario at Fanshawe Golf Club on August 14- 16, 2017. Thank you to our Optimist volunteers who marshalled the tournament – Wilson Bedford, Jim Lynge, Ted Simmonds, Max Rumble and Don Staddon. Next year’s District Qualifier will be tentatively held on Saturday, June 18, 2018 at Caledon Country Club, Inglewood, Ontario.  Winners of the Canadian National Junior Golf Championships continue on the the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in the United States to compete on a PGA course.  Watch the video below to see how incredible the International Junior Golf Tournament is for participants from around the world.
